29 Weeks

Although I am getting through most of it, I just don't feel like doing my work. I'm in full procrastinatory mode and can find so many things that I'd much rather be doing than what I'm supposed to be doing. A part of it is that I actually only have about 3 projects on the go work-wise...and the projects of growing a baby & getting ready to pack up a house to move in 6 weeks time (yes! we got the house!!) seem much more important...so I've been in limbo between doing what I should be doing & what I also should be doing, and instead I'm blogging to feel as though I've achieved something for the day.

So: 29 weeks! 11 weeks to go & little one is getting stronger & stronger & more active all the time. I LOVE feeling her move! ...and I love feeling Geoff feeling her move!

I'm feeling a lot better at the moment -- My SPD has almost disappeared, although I have been having quite a lot of back pain in the last week or so. Its such a relief not to be in constant pain.

This afternoon we'll be attending Robyn Sheldon's course at Mama Bamba called 'unborn child awareness' which teaches parents to connect with unborn children. I am really looking forward to us doing the course & to gaining new knowledge on connecting which we can implement for the next 11 or so weeks.

Geoff is convinced that she will be arriving on the 28th August! :)
I just hope she doesn't decide to come before the 14th so we can have a few weeks to settle into our new home. (Mom said she knows of people that have picked up / moved moving boxes with their foot & its broken their waters so NOT to do that!!)

I had a chat with one of our new artist book club ladies last night & she told me that she used to be a midwife... she was a midwife for a year and delivered around 30 babies & just loved that chapter of her life... She said that I seem to be carrying perfectly for my body shape etc & that I am really looking great. (It's always good to hear nice things!).

Baby Center Says:

Your baby now weighs about 2 1/2 pounds (like a butternut squash) and is a tad over 15 inches long from head to heel. His muscles and lungs are continuing to mature, and his head is growing bigger to make room for his developing brain. To meet his increasing nutritional demands, you'll need plenty of protein, vitamins C, folic acid, and iron. Because his bones are soaking up lots of calcium, be sure to drink your milk or another good source of calcium. This trimester, about 250 milligrams of calcium are deposited in your baby's hardening skeleton each day.

A Touch of Camembert

The title of this post refers to 'good cheese'.
There are so many little things that crop up that are soppy and sentimental but I can't help feeling drawn to them because of what is happening inside me...
I read the other day: Mother to child: "You know that I love you because you're the only one who's heard my heartbeat from the inside". As much as my better judgment tells me that its silly and cheesy, my tear-ducts think its beautiful & worthy of release of emotion...

Here's one I found on Pinterest today:

28 Week Update

We're finally at 28 weeks & have just entered the 3rd trimester... our squid feels like she's growing really rapidly at this point & she's definitely feeling more active... She's supposed to be over 1kg now. Its really amazing to us that she could be born at this stage & have a really good chance of survival.

In some ways it doesn't really feel real yet... I closed the fridge door the other day & my tummy got in the way.... and then yesterday, whilst looking through a 'junk shop' for a new sugar bowl (lids keep breaking in interesting ways) I realised that I had to now squish through & try not to bump anything over with my handbag (as usual) and now also avoid knocking things over with my tummy. No visits to the Kalk Bay china shop for me for a while!!! (new sugar bowl will have to wait!)

Geoff & I went to Riebeek Kasteel for Sunday night for my birthday. It was so good to get away... although when we got back it was to the stink of dead mouse. We've been hunting for it all day to no avail & have now blocked the area with some plastic to try and seal off the smell. Its disgusting. I'm burning 'sweet orange' essential oil. I think I'm going to go through a lot of that.

I've been sleeping very badly. I've been terribly restless. I hardly got anything done today because of the mouse hunts & tomorrow is going to be another busy busy one. *sigh* ....Hopefully we'll find out about the house & I can get to packing sooner than later...

Baby Centre Says:

By this week, your baby weighs two and a quarter pounds (like a Chinese cabbage) and measures 14.8 inches from the top of her head to her heels. She can blink her eyes, which now sport lashes. With her eyesight developing, she may be able to see the light that filters in through your womb. She's also developing billions of neurons in her brain and adding more body fat in preparation for life in the outside world.

At this point, you'll likely visit your doctor or midwife every two weeks. Then, at 36 weeks, you'll switch to weekly visits.

Around this time, some women feel an unpleasant "creepy-crawly" sensation in their lower legs and an irresistible urge to move them while trying to relax or sleep. If this sensation is at least temporarily relieved when you move, you may have what's known as restless legs syndrome (RLS). No one knows for sure what causes RLS, but it's relatively common among expectant mothers. Try stretching or massaging your legs, and cut down on caffeine, which can make the symptoms worse. Ask your caregiver if you should try iron supplements, which can sometimes relieve RLS.

New Home?

We got the security update for our area the other day & at the bottom was an ad for a house up the road that is coming up for rent at the beginning of August.... I told Geoff about it & we decided to go and have a little look..... and it is a really really great house! It has 3 bedrooms, an en-suite + separate bathroom..... a huge double length garage... PLUS an office space & a lovely double volume living space WITH A FIREPLACE.. and a lovely indigenous garden with the most exquisite Bougainvillea growing on the edge of the stoop railing... and a better view & more privacy than we have right now.

This compared with our 3 level, 1 bedroom house with 1 bathroom (on not the same level as the bedroom) & a trapdoor for garden access....

We will look at it again tomorrow & hopefully the landlady will pick us.... looks like some box packing may be on the agenda in a couple of weeks time.

Crossed fingers!!!!

Baby Shower

I've been fretting a little bit lot about the concept of having a baby shower. It doesn't suit me. Actually, that's not right: it doesn't suit me to organise something like that for myself and so I have been fighting and working through various feelings surrounding how to marry the ideas of
a) celebrating our pending arrival with family and friends in a meaningful way
b) inviting people to an event where they feel obliged to bring gifts
c) having to get over my disaster of a 'bridal shower' that never got organised for me because the person who said she would organise one, just didn't bother...

I have only ever been to a handful of baby showers. The first one I went to was all about how pink and silly absolutely everything kitch could possibly be. Another was my sister in law's which was really well organised (her mom is unstoppable when it comes to event organising)... My sister's, I organised (and proceeded to get really irritated with the handful of girls that were yabbering at the other side of the room while very considered & amazing gifts were being opened)... my friend, Eloise's a few weeks back which was a very nice breakfast (surprisingly because I didn't know anybody except for my friend)... and then, on Saturday, to my complete surprise, I experienced my own baby shower!

It was my birthday on Sunday & my mom has been saying for ages that she wants to take my sister and I out for tea when she comes to Cape Town... The date was set for Saturday.
I got to my sister's house...we got into her car with little Grace (who's first birthday party we were going to be holding at T'Neal's house at 2pm) & drove to Constantia Village where my sister was evidently going to drop off a photo book for a client... We met Dad & Dave who had had breakfast at Melissa's....The plan was that they were going to take Grace home so 'us girls' could have a tea and chat...but as I walked in the door, I saw Diana (my mom's friend who lives in Durbanville) and Marina (my dad's cousin who lives in Somerset West) sitting at a table at the door - I was so confused as to why the 2 of them were having tea in Constantia on my birthday of all days... I looked up and saw my Dad... and then another friend & I finally realised that I was having my first ever surprise party!!! and I was completely surprised!!!

It was perfect. T'Neal and Mom had organised everything... I didn't have to worry about the guest list... what to tell people I still need... where to have the shower... I didn't suspect a thing!

Everybody made me feel so loved and so special... The biggest blessing is that it happened & that I could just sit back and enjoy it with family and friends! Thanks to all who came x x x

..PS: just had to post this picture of my niece, Grace, in mid-discovery of lipstick:

27 Weeks

Bump at 26 weeks

We're at 27 weeks this week & our little one is moving around quite a bit inside... She's so sweet as she seems to respond with lots of little nudges when I'm feeling a bit sad. Geoff has been talking to her a lot & he is so sweet...singing songs & calling her...telling her little stories about her mommy :)

I went shopping with Aline last week & we went to the Treehouse Factory Shop. I found a really lovely fabric play mat with puffy sides & matching toy/laundry bin...one of those towel things that we can put her on to change her / dry her when she comes out of the bath...and a couple of stretchy blankets... Her Nanny is washing her first clothes for us & I've prepared a set of drawers to put her things into... Its FREEZING cold so I'm quite glad we don't have to try and keep her warm outside of me at this point!

Geoff has put a curtain rail up & we've hung one of my beautiful silk retro curtains in front of one of the bedroom doors for temperature & light control. ...So things are moving ahead one step at a time, but at least we're making some progress.

Baby Centre says:
How your baby's growing:

This week, your baby weighs almost 2 pounds (like a head of cauliflower) and is about 14 1/2 inches long with her legs extended. She's sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing her eyes, and perhaps even sucking her fingers. With more brain tissue developing, your baby's brain is very active now. While her lungs are still immature, they would be capable of functioning — with a lot of medical help — if she were to be born now. Chalk up any tiny rhythmic movements you may be feeling to a case of baby hiccups, which may be common from now on. Each episode usually lasts only a few moments, and they don't bother her, so just relax and enjoy the tickle.

The second trimester is drawing to a close, but as your body gears up for the final lap, you may start noticing some new symptoms. Along with an aching back, for example, you may find that your leg muscles cramp up now and then. They're carrying extra weight, after all, and your expanding uterus is putting pressure on the veins that return blood from your legs to your heart as well as on the nerves leading from your trunk to your legs. Unfortunately, the cramps may get worse as your pregnancy progresses. Leg cramps are more common at night but can also happen during the day. When a cramp strikes, stretching the calf muscle should give you some relief. Straighten your leg and then gently flex your toes back toward your shin. Walking for a few minutes or massaging your calf sometimes helps, too.

Early Thoughts

The 'early' in the title is actually referring to the time. It is now 4.25am as I start typing and I've been up for the last couple of hours trying to sort out gall bladder pain. At first I just made a mild-water-bottle & some lemon water...tried to lie down but it is too sore & I need to sit up to get everything moving in a digestible direction. My gran, grandpa, aunt and dad (the Purcocks side) have all had theirs out.. I'm still hanging in there, but its not easy. I've managed to reduce the occurrences of this to once every couple of months. In this case, its giving me time to reflect on some things.

I just read through my friend Sarai's blog...and her experience of giving birth to her 2nd son, Jeremy.  There is so much talk about women being forced into c-section by doctors & her experience seems to have been one of those. The lack of support & total lack of general kindness towards her is quite shocking. If we hadn't attended our Antenatal course with Mama Bamba this last weekend I think her story would have freaked me out.

As it is though, I am feeling quite satisfied at this point with the 'team' we have put together for Stella's arrival into the world. We have our midwife, Sandy, who everybody raves about...I met a girl at T'Neal's 28th birthday this week who had Sandy as her midwife & she said that she'd had a wonderful natural birth experience. We have gentle and lovely Dr.Caro Nel in case of any complications: I feel that she will be gentle with me in the case that something goes wrong & we are in need of a c-section... And then we have each other - Geoff and myself: I feel so happy and blessed knowing that he will support me through this wonderful experience for us both. I feel confident that 'our team' will fight for sticking to our 'birth plan' and that we will not be put in a position to be disrespected in any way by hospital staff.

I met somebody else last night who raved about her 2 birth experiences - her second daughter was born within a half hour. What I loved most about everything she said was that her midwife allowed her husband to take the first daughter out -- she took the second one out. I love this because I would love for Geoff to be the one to take our little one out if he is in position to do so. I have not seen Sandy yet to ask her so it is lovely to know that someone I've met has had that experience. :)

In my ramblings around the internet I also found something so beautiful:
Actress Tina Fey's prayer for her child:

First, Lord: No tattoos. May neither Chinese symbol for truth nor Winnie-the-Pooh holding the FSU logo stain her tender haunches.
May she be Beautiful but not Damaged, for it’s the Damage that draws the creepy soccer coach’s eye, not the Beauty.
When the Crystal Meth is offered, may she remember the parents who cut her grapes in half And stick with Beer.
Guide her, protect her when crossing the street, stepping onto boats, swimming in the ocean, swimming in pools, walking near pools, standing on the subway platform, crossing 86th Street, stepping off of boats, using mall restrooms, getting on and off escalators, driving on country roads while arguing, leaning on large windows, walking in parking lots, riding Ferris wheels, roller-coasters, log flumes, or anything called “Hell Drop,” “Tower of Torture,” or “The Death Spiral Rock ‘N Zero G Roll featuring Aerosmith,” and standing on any kind of balcony ever, anywhere, at any age.
Lead her away from Acting but not all the way to Finance. Something where she can make her own hours but still feel intellectually fulfilled and get outside sometimes And not have to wear high heels. What would that be, Lord? Architecture? Midwifery? Golf course design? I’m asking You, because if I knew, I’d be doing it, Youdammit.
May she play the Drums to the fiery rhythm of her Own Heart with the sinewy strength of her Own Arms, so she need Not Lie With Drummers.
Grant her a Rough Patch from twelve to seventeen.Let her draw horses and be interested in Barbies for much too long, For childhood is short – a Tiger Flower blooming Magenta for one day – And adulthood is long and dry-humping in cars will wait.
O Lord, break the Internet forever, that she may be spared the misspelled invective of her peers And the online marketing campaign for Rape Hostel V: Girls Just Wanna Get Stabbed.
And when she one day turns on me and calls me a Bitch in front of Hollister, Give me the strength, Lord, to yank her directly into a cab in front of her friends, For I will not have that Shit. I will not have it.
And should she choose to be a Mother one day, be my eyes, Lord, that I may see her, lying on a blanket on the floor at 4:50 A.M., all-at-once exhausted, bored, and in love with the little creature whose poop is leaking up its back. “My mother did this for me once,” she will realize as she cleans feces off her baby’s neck. “My mother did this for me.” And the delayed gratitude will wash over her as it does each generation and she will make a Mental Note to call me. And she will forget. But I’ll know, because I peeped it with Your God eyes.
Amen.”
-Tina Fey

I've been extremely emotional over the last few months & have been suffering quite badly with SPD: pelvic girdle pain. My pelvis is skew & my chiropractor says that it is most likely from the emotional stress that I have been under for the last 2 months. I've had 2 appointments this week & am feeling a little better now. (She probably loosened things to the extent that my organs can work properly again and hence the gall bladder pain!)

My mom and dad came to visit this week & mom helped me sort through all the things we've acquired for our little one from our trip...gifts & hand-me-downs. There is hardly a thing I still need -- all the nice smelling creams & powders, a baby monitor (with temperature gauge) and a cot.. and otherwise, most other things seem to have sorted themselves out! I really feel blessed because I have not had the inclination to do shopping for time, energy and space reasons. Sounds like a shuttle mission :)

I am about a 1/4 through making a rainbow colour, bamboo & cotton blanket for her to snuggle up with & love as her own. It is strange to be making something for our child who will be arriving so soon into this world where we can hold her and love her.

We'll be 25 weeks on Monday. 15 weeks to go!

My main thought is that I can hardly wait to meet our daughter. All this talk of 'baby stuff' - thinking about where to put it... wondering if my milk will come in well... pain, acid reflux and emotional stress: I know that it will be worth it when we hold her in those first days. I feel her moving & I have an idea of what it may be like to love her. How my heart will open up to envelope her so completely. I know this because of the wonder I feel at how my heart has reacted & expanded in knowing and loving Geoff. It is beyond description. Awesome: I am in total awe.

This makes being human worth it.
